The 50th episode - a new way of recording

Oh it has felt like a long week.

But I did it to myself, so I can't moan too much.

The 50th episode is out and the longest I've ever done - but it was the way I produced it this time that has caused so much extra work.

Let me step back a little.

For all the episodes so far, I've written a "word for word" script. Then read it out ... which I've never really been happy with.

I wanted to achieve a more engaging conversational tone.

Thus I'm currently reading this book:

Find Your Voice

Its a great book - and I'm a fan of Caroline's work - having greatly enjoyed her Gravitas book.

One of the recommendations that Caroline makes is to switch from a script to a mindmap. Then use the mindmap for reference as you talk.

And that is how I started with episode 50 - which for the recording was actually quite good.

It does however take a lot more work to edit the audio. I found I had to remove a lot of empty space and "Ums".

I also notice I have a number of filler words like "OK" which I could do with working on.

It was also a much longer job to produce the transcript. Previously I would have just uploaded the script. Now I'm using a service called Sonix. It does a great job of transcribing the audio to text - but it still takes time to edit it down.

Overall though, I am pleased with the result.

Yes there is a lot of room for improvement. But I'm actually seeing that as a good thing.

With practice, I expect to get a lot better speaking from a mindmap - to better articulate my thoughts and speak is a much clearer, conversational tone.

Thus with practice, the audit editing and transcribing should be easier (I can but hope).

And I expect those skills to carry through to my everyday work.

Episode 50 released

Yep, its released.

In it I recap all the episodes since the last recap episode (episode 25).

I summarise the key takeaways - and highlight which episodes to listen to if you want more.

Thank for for reading. Stay safe Mark
